Air pressure
of every tyre should be checked at least
every fortnight. Incorrect tyre pressures
can lead to the inside of the tyre being
damaged, resulting in tyre problems or
even a blow out.
Incorrect
tyre pressure causes premature and uneven
tyre wear. This apart, under inflated
tyres have a higher rolling resistance
and thereby higher fuel consumption.
Tyres
must be inflated to specified pressures,
which refer to cold tyres. Driving causes
heat buildup. Hence you would read pressure
inside warm tyres naturally higher than
the pressure filled in. One must never
reduce such pressure as on cooling , their
pressure could fall below the minimum
tyre pressure.
Driving
over curbstones or over potholed roads
may cause internal damage to tyres, leading
to failure at high speeds.
If
the tyre is visibly damaged (i.e. has
a fracture or a cut that exposes the tyre
material or has an unusual wear pattern)
, the tyre must be taken off as quickly
as possible.
Check
tyres regularly for damage from stones
,nail, etc that have penetrated the tyre
tread ,also check if there are any bulges
or cuts on the sidewalls.
Rotate
the tyres at regular intervals of 6500
Kms to prolong tyre life. For virtually
all vehicles, rotating to transform one
axle to the other is permitted In certain
cases can also be advantages, so as to
reverse their sense of rotation.
It
is also advisable to get the balance checked
at a 6500 Kms interval. When the tyres
are rotated.
Harsh
acceleration, braking with locked wheels
and fast steering movements shorten the
service life of tyres. Sudden vibrations
of the steering wheel could point to tyre
damage, such as severe scuffing. etc.
Repairs
using cold or temporary repairs are used
as emergency means to take you home and
should be rectified immediately without
any delay.
